A Decade of Light: Sironga Primary Mass Distribution

Sironga Distribution Beneficiary Portrait

As we step into 2025, GDEO celebrates a monumental milestone—10 years of empowering communities across Nyamira South through clean energy. We kicked off our anniversary year with our most ambitious outreach yet at Sironga Primary School.

During this event, 90 reliable solar lighting units were distributed to the most needy pupils and vulnerable widows in the area. This was more than just a distribution; it was a community-wide sensitization on the climate-positive impact of sustainable energy and how it directly transforms lives by ending dependency on fossil fuels.

Impact Delivered: Immediate financial relief for 90 households, significantly reduced kerosene-induced smoke inhalation, and drastically enhanced academic conditions for our local students.

Revolutionizing Food Security with Solar Micro-Irrigation

Kitchen Gardening Demo Technician Setup Water Pumping Demo

As unpredictable weather patterns exacerbated by climate change threaten rural food supplies, GDEO has launched a major initiative in Ramba Village crossing clean energy with agriculture. By installing solar-powered micro-irrigation systems, we've demonstrated how sustainable farming works in practice.

Our women technicians successfully led the installation of solar control panels and water pumping infrastructure to establish robust demonstration kitchen gardens. These setups teach surrounding community groups how to maintain year-round crop yields without relying entirely on rain.

Impact Delivered: Drought-proof food production systems that simultaneously boost household incomes through excess produce sales.

Pioneers of the Sun: Cohort 1 Graduation

Cohort 1

A historic moment for GDEO and Nyamira South! Our inaugural class of women solar technicians—Cohort 1—has officially earned their certifications. Breaking deep-seated cultural norms that traditionally isolated women from technical and engineering roles, these pioneers took to the roofs to claim their space.

Their graduation proves that women are not just passive beneficiaries of development, but the active, capable hands driving it. They step out today to electrify their villages and inspire the next generation of girls to look towards engineering and climate sciences.

Impact Delivered: The birth of a localized, women-led solar maintenance workforce—the very first of its kind in our region.

The Spark of Change: Inception of GDEO

GDEO Logo

The Grassroots Development Empowerment Organization (GDEO) was founded in late 2015 with a clear, urgent mission: to tackle energy poverty and mitigate the impacts of climate change by empowering the very heart of the community—women.

Recognizing that women bear the brunt of fetching firewood and inhaling toxic kerosene fumes, we conceptualized a framework where they become the architects of their own energy independence. Thus, the idea of training local women as solar technicians was born.

Impact Delivered: Laying the strategic bedrock for a community-based organization that fundamentally links clean energy adoption to socioeconomic empowerment.
